TMG v5.08.000 is now available. [15 July 2003]
Per the issue of the newsletter earlier today, this update primarily fixes
an unexpected "File is in use" error that started on this date and
prevented all report output. Some of TMG's temporary file names are based
on a calculation involving the system clock but that calculation started
producing invalid results earlier today.
We think that we are very close to a release that includes word processor
output, the Journal report, and some other reports but the severity of this
problem took precedence and we made every effort to provide a fix on the
same day.
In addition to fixing the "File is in use" error, this update includes a
few new features and a variety of bug fixes as follows:
- Added a new button on the Data Set Manager to renumber a data set.
- Added new features to the Exhibit Log for External Text exhibit. An
external text exhibit can now refer to any sort of file. An effort to
"View" any non-TXT file will trigger the application that is associated
with that file extension (e.g., Excel for XLS, Word for DOC, Internet
Explorer for HTM, etc.). *NOTE*, however, that only real text (TXT) files
will be embedded in TMG reports when exhibit output is supported. Also,
Internal text exhibits can only be TXT files.
- Help files have been updated.
- Language translation files have been updated.
- Item tips no longer time out.
- Relationship tags are now included in the list of fields in List of
People filters.
- Fixed a problem viewing the Reference field when the Add Person screen is
resized.
- The death date was not updated sometimes when an existing death event was
reassigned to another person.
- Fixed the List of Source filter by Source type.
- Improved the UFT and GEDCOM imports.
- GEDCOM export: Source Compiler and Editor are now exported
- Research log now checks for (and prohibits) irregular dates
- Numeric filter values now support the [?] variable.
- The Tag Entry screen sometimes did not allow scrolling to all of the roles.
- Cancelling the Report Definition Screen deleted the Language checkmark
- F2 in a date field didn't sort dates properly
- A Relationship tag sometimes displayed a non-primary birth date for the
child.
- All Reports: the name of a Selected Focus Group was not saved with the
Report Definition.
- The "no sureties" warning was triggered when in Beginners data entry mode
- Visual Chartform: fixed a problem with siblings on an ancestor box chart
- Default styles weren't applied to the Add Person window
- Fixed Backup-wrong message when the floppy disk was missing.
- Fixed some isolated filter problems and a variety of more esoteric bugs.
From the Whollygenes newsletter;
TMG v5.07.000 is now available. This release does not yet include any new
reports but simply fixes a number of bugs that were discovered after the
release of v5.06.000 as follows:
- Fixed a font problem encountered by some users who had 200
or more fonts on their system.
- Fixed a variety of circumstances that would cause the mouse
cursor to temporarily disappear.
- The program now recognizes keystrokes that were made before
the window opened (aka "typeahead").
- When moving people between data sets, new tag types would
sometimes be created (e.g., Education2) instead of using the
existing one.
- The Find/Replace functions are now available in the Sentence field.
- There were some circumstances in which duplicate places were
not removed by the Optimize feature.
- And/Or connectors were not saved properly under some
circumstances in a report filter.
- Fixed a handful of filter conditions that did not work.
- The count of witnesses was sometimes wrong on the
Project Information report.
- The right-click options for embedded citations did not work.
- The Timeline edit process did not respect the Timeline path set
in Preferences
- The List of People report would sometimes appear to lock up
the program when output to a file.
- It was sometimes not possible to add the number of
generations to search on a report filter.
- Fixed some translation issues for researchers in other languages.
- On the Add Person Template, the custom place style
sometimes did not stick
- After changing principals of a marriage, the program was
sometimes confused about who was the last viewed spouse.
- Using the List of People report to copy people to a different
project, sometimes neglected to copy custom flags.
- Box Charts and Fan Charts did not honor the program language.
- Added an hourglass cursor for some operations that didn't
have one while the program was busy.
- On the Project Information report, the number of places
was off by 1
- Fixed an error message when clicking on the father's ID
column in the Expanded Picklist.
- Shortcut keys did not work if Caps Lock was on.
- The vertical scrollbar on the Expanded Picklist was misaligned
- Fixed the display of surety values after using the Cite a
Source Globally feature
- Fixed some rare problems when importing from UFT
- After starting the Relationship Calculator there was a line
thruough the Calculate button
- The bottom of the Master Place List column headings
were cut off
- Fixed an occasional error message when opening a research
task attached to a person or to a disabled data set.
- Fixed an erroneous warning message that popped up in
some circumstances when adding a son or daughter.
- The internal spelling checker did not always work properly
on tag sentences
- Fixed some screen distortion issues when windows are resized

Presentation which Caroline Gurney gave last November to the TMG-UK Users
Group meeting
about my UK Source templates.
It has some general stuff about the meaning of the terms Repository, Source
and Citation in TMG, as well as the building blocks which TMG uses to create
a source (source elements, source element groups and source templates).
These might be especially helpful to new users having a hard time getting
their heads round the concepts.

Date: 26-Sep-97 23:13:26 From: Paul Featherstone Subj: TMG USER GROUP UK
Just a short report on the last meeting [13 Sep 1997]:
A disappointing turn out, I had to change the booking to a small room on the Friday before the event. However the quality of the event was not spoilt by the quantity of people present.
One had travelled all the way from Plymouth by train, and left early to catch a train home.
We talked over citation values, and the benefits of using the witness function for census returns.
We looked at how far one could go in recording information, a new member had brought along his dataset on disc, so we could discuss, his problems, he had gone to great lengths to produce sources, and repository information, and since I had introduced him to the program at the SOG fair back in May, I was quite impressed at his progress, I wish my database was in such condition.
Some members present thought that he was taking it to the Nth degree, but the majority felt that he had used the program to it's fullest extent to good effect and that if his descendents can run the program they should not have difficultly following his lines of research.
We again touched on the Custom Report Writer, which most of us felt was a tool we yet had to come to grips with, and many went away determined to get more use out of it. In fact we all promised to come to the next meeting armed with a useful report, which we found useful.
We looked at the F2 button and how we could sort, and focus, on various pieces of information on the list. of people, which some members present did not know was possible, in fact some actually exported information in the form of a GEDCOM file imported into another program to get out the report they needed, when we looked at the search faculties within the program they came to realise that it was possible and they would go home and play, and come back next time and report.
The recording of baptisms, as against actual birth was discussed and some people realised for the first time that if when creating a person, from the create person field, that if you selected baptism instead of birth date then this date was displayed in the pick list.
The next meeting was planned for early December, however room rates are to be increased at The Bear, and so we are looking for a new location, I have asked Keith Rookledge to look at a venue in his neck of the woods, he will be back, I am sure, soon, to give me details, will keep you posted.

Paul in sunny Surrey
