My great-grandfather, Joseph A. Featherstone was born in 1848 inFairfield County, South Carolina. At the age of 13-14 he enlisted as aRebel soldier and fought in the Civil War. He was an acknowledgedveteran by The Gastonia Chapter 955 Civil War Veteran CSA UDC (UnitedDaughters of the Civil War] Society.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~
While researching this family history, I ran across the words to a songthat was sung to the tune of "America," by the families of rebel soldierswho went off to fight in the Civil War:
God HOLD our precious men,
Preserve them to the end,
God HOLD our men.
Safe in Thy arms so strong
HOLD them from every wrong.
To Thee they all belong.
God HOLD our men.
God KEEP our own dear men,
From every stain of sin,
God KEEP our men,
When Satan would allure,
When tempted, KEEP them pure.
Be their protection sure
God KEEP our men.
God SAVE our splendid men,
Send them safe home again,
God SAVE our men.
Make them victorious,
Patient and Chivalrous,
They are so dear to us,
God SAVE our men.
Joseph A. Featherstone first appears listed in the 1850 South CarolinaFairfield County Census as the 3 year old son of C.A. and ElizabethElders Featherstone. Clement and Elizabeth moved their family to GastonCounty, North Carolina between 1850 and 1860. It is known that Josephand his older brothers Richard, William, James and Clem Jr. and theirsister Mary were all born in South Carolina.
The 1860 North Carolina Gaston County Census lists Joseph as the 12 yearold son of C.A. and Elizabeth Featherstone.
The 1870 NC-Gaston County Census lists Joseph under "dwelling no.124/family no. 124" separately from his father's, which was listed asdwelling number 122, family 122. Both Joseph and his father C.A. werenoted as being "males eligible to vote."
The 1880 NC-Gaston County Census, for the Southpoint Township, listsJoseph A. Featherstone, age 32, as a farmer born in S.C. married toMollie E. (Mary), age 28, born in North Carolina who keeps house. Theirchildren are listed as: James C. age 9, John H. age 7, William age 5,Richard age 3, and Joseph E. age 2 months, born in March of 1880. Most likely, not our Joseph, since our Joseph was born in 1847, he wouldhave been only 14 yrs. old, and not 23, unless of course he lied abouthis age. Historically, many of the rebel solidiers who joined the ranksduring the Civil War did not do so formally.
About 1851 she married Fountain Alexander in Pickens County, SC as hissecond wife, becoming step-mother to his three sons; David A., Terrel M.,and Henson, and daughter Elizabeth. She and Fountain had two daughtersin 1852/3 and 1855 respectively. Fountain owned 350 acres of land onboth sides of Crow Creek, which he willed to his sons, under date of 6Oct. 1856, "by a deed of gift-sum of $5.00 paid by my loving sons for 350acres on both sides of Crow Creek adjoining Holdens land, Lemuel Thomas'land, first granted to Barney Glenn and Robert Craven. Mary Frances Featherston was named after her Grandmothers; Mary NeagleFeatherstone and Frances C. Herman. I have very warm and loving memoriesof my Aunt Mary. As a child, I often stayed with her and Uncle A.C. andalways had a wonderful time. She and Betty would play all sorts of gameswith me, and Uncle AC was never without Wrigly's Spearmint Gum, a staplefor appeasing any child!
She once gave me a necklace for Christmas hidden inside a walnut shell.She told me, all I was going to get for Christmas from her was anut...she enjoyed teasing me. Another of her favorite pranks was to askyou if you had been good, she would then test you to see if you weretelling the truth by squeezing the top of your knee....if you laughed, itmeant you were fibbing! Of course, I had ticklish knees! [DarleneFeatherstone Lankford]
Her funeral was held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 27, 1985, at theCenterview Baptist Church in Belmont. The services were officiated byRev. Dennis Thurman. The pallbearers were Fred Bumgardner, Jim Frazier,Joe Leonhardt, Miles Gaddis, Harry Abernathy, and Barney Huggins.
