Tucker and I asked for a Transfer, as you could move after
three years at one posting. We transferred to a Plains station
in North East India. After two or three weeks we were back in
the Hills again only in North east india and the foot hills of
the Himalayas. To Chaklala a hill station for families of the
army personnel. We spent our time doing training excercises,
and very little else.

Left India from Bombay, as part of the 22nd Moutain Reg. Royal
Artillary.
Billeted intially with the British Heavy Artillary, and some
time later with the Royal Navy in the Seletar Barracks.
Defending the seaward approaches with 15 inch guns.

Posted to Pierak in northern Malaya just south of the border
with Thailand.
To new Barracks built in the Rubber plantations.
Spent weekends on leave on the Island of Penang.

Japanese invaded Malaya, broke through the Punjab Regiment and
forced us back down Malaya, they kept landing behind us and
finally destroyed the brigade as the Japs laid an ambush at the
Selim River. I ended up in Singapore which fell to the
Japanese on the 15 Feb 1942. I was taken prisoner.

We were moved to a base camp by the japs in cattle trucks and
moved by train packed liked sardines, and then by forced march
the rest of the way. The japs then put us to work building the
Railway to the Three Pagoda Pass in Burma. Camps were set up at
5 kilometre intervals and work parties were set up, one set
with the survey team, one to clear the Jungle, and one to build
the enbankments, I was employed on this carrying one end of a
bamboo strecher carrying soil to build up the embankments.
