AZ During the CW AZ had some 200 Confederate soldiers and over 6,000 from the New Mexico territory fought for the Union.
CO US territory in 1861, state in 1876. Spain and France alternated control of the area until 1803, until all but the areas south and west of the Arkansas River were sold to the United States. An 1860 Territorial Census was taken in the four territories of which CO was a part. The UT part was not yet settled. NE was part of "un-organized territory". KS census was listed in Arapahoe County schedules, and NM is listed in the Taos and Mora county schedules.
CT CT had many boundary disputes with colonies, especially RI, MA and NY. CT present boundaries were set in 1880. CT played an important part in the Revolutionary War. More than 40,000 of its men served in the war. During the CW more than 55,000 trops served in the Union army.
DC organized 1790, seat of government 1800. Slavery was abolished in DC in 1862.
DE MD claimed the southern and western pars of DE from 1684-1763. Although DE was a slave state during the CW, it overwhelmingly supported the Union. Over 16,000 men served the Union while only several hundred served the Confederacy.
FL In 1810 and 1812, The US annexed portions of West FL to Louisiana and the Mississippi Territory. FL seceded from the Union in 1861. Over 1000 men fought for the Union and about 20,000 for the Confederacy. Was readmitted in 1868.
GA US state in 1788. Seceded in 1861, readmitted ----. GA's present boundaries were set in 1802. Well over 100,000 GA men fought for the Confederacy.
IA The US acquired this territory in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. IA sided with the Union in the CW, sending over 76,000 men to serve in the Union Army
IN Before 1809 parts of IN were included in the MI and IL Territories. IN remained in the Union during the CW and furnished about 196,000 soldiers to the cause.
KS Was part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. During the Civil War, KS had over 20,000 Union soldiers. Its men suffered the highest mortality rate of any state in the Union. Many CW veterans took up homesteads in the state.
KY Although neutral during CW, KY had over 75,000 men in the Union forces and 35,000 to 60,000 in the Confederate forces.
LA During the Revolutionary War, some British sympathizers moved into the ara to avoid conflict. The LA Purchase of 1803 made Louisiana part of the US. Seceded in 1861, readmitted in 1868. LA furnished over 77,000 soldiers to the Confederacy and 5,000 to the Union.
MA Maine separated from Massachusetts in 1819. During the CW Massachusetts furnished 146,000 men to the Union forces

MO The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 made Missouri part of the United States. In 1861, MO considered secession but voted against it. After the start of the CW, the governor repudiated Lincoln's call for troops and called up the state militia to fight for the Confederacy. Federal (Union) troops defeated the militia .... An estimated 40,000 men fought for the Confederacy, while about 109,000 fought for the Union.
MS During the Revolutionary War, Natchez District (a MS settlement) remained loyal to England. Seceded from the Union in 1861, readmitted in 1870. Estimates suggest that over 112,000 men served in the Confederate forces, while just over 500 fought for the Union.
NC NC was first differentiated from SC in 1691, On achieving statehood, NC ceded Tennessee to the United States. NC seceded from the Union in 1861. It provided the most troops of any state to the Confederacy, an estimated 125,000. NC also had the most casualties, over 40,000 killed. Union forces received over 3,000 soldiers from NC. Was readmitted to the Union in 1868
ND The Louisiana Purchase in 1803 gave the southwestern half of ND to the US. The Dakota Territory was organized in 1861 and included the two Dakotas, Montana, and Wyoming. During the Civil War about 200 men fought for the Union troops.
NJ Many important battles of the Revolutionary War took place in NJ. Residents supported both sides in the civil war.
NM During the Civil War, NM was invaded by Confederate forces. They were defeated by Union forces in 1862 and forced to withdraw. NM furnished about 6,000 men to the Union forces.
NV In 1848, NV along with other western states, became part of the United States.
NY Nearly 1/3 of the battles in the Revolutionary War were fought in NY. During the Civil War, NY supplied 448,000 troops to the Union cause.
OH The treaty ending the Revolutionary War ceded the area to the US. During the Civil War, OH had some 313,000 men serve in the Union forces.
OK The US acquired the area in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1817, the federal government began sending Indians to the area fro AL, GA, FL and MS. The state was divided among the five nations: Creek, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Seminole. During the Civil War, the five Indian nations sided with the Confederacy. About 3,500 Indians helped the Confederates.
PA Philadelphia played an important role during the Revolution and in the drafting of the Constitution. PA was among the greatest contributors of men, money, and supplies to the Revolutionary War and was the site of many of the important battles... PA was the 2nd state to ratify the Constitution. PA had the first anti-slavery society in 1775. It is no wonder that the state was so pro-Union. Nearly 400,000 men served for the Union.
RI was the first colony to declare independence from England, in May 1776. RI was the last to accept the Constitution, fearful of a strong central government and high taxes. Slavery was gradually abolished starting in 1784. During the Civil War, about 23,000 men served in the Union armed forces.
SC In 1729, Carolina was divided into North and South Carolina and in 1732, part of SC became GA. SC was the first state to secede from the Union in 1860. The first shots were fired by SC troops on Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. The state was devastated by General William Tecumseh Sherman during the war. An estimated 63,000 men served in the Confederate forces from SC. Readmission to the Union came in 1868.
SD The US gained the region with the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. North and South Dakota were divided in 1867. About 200 men served from the Dakota Territory with the Union during the Civil War.
TN King Charles II included TN in his grant of the Carolinas in 1663. NC annexed Tennessee in 1776 as Washington County. During the Revolutionay War, there were a number of volunteers from the state and some notable battles, including the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780, which was the turning point of the war in the South. In 1784, NC ceded TN to the US. The federal government refused and the people in TN organized the State of Franklin. This lasted 4 years and NC regained control of the area in 1789. NC again ceded the area to the US in 1789, which formed the Southwest Territory in 1790. In 1861, TN seceded from the Union. The Confederacy received about 110,000 soldiers from TN and the Union about 31,000. TN was readmitted to the Union in 1866.
UT With the end of the Mexican War, Utah became a part of the US.
VA was prominent in the Revolutionary War due to its great leaders. Little fighting occurred on Virginian soil until the final years of the war and the final surrender at Yorktown. VA seceded from the Union in 1861. VA was the central battlefield for the Civil War, with the first major battle at Bull Run (Manassas) and the final surrender at Appomatox. An estimated 155,000 men from VA fought for the Confederacy. VA was readmitted to the Union in 1870.
WV When VA seceded from the Union in 1861, western counties objected. Fifty western counties united to from "The Restored Government of Virginia" and petitioned Congress for re-admission to the Union. The state of WV was admitted to the Union in 1863, after Union victories in the area cleared out the Confederates. During the Civil War, WV had about 32,000 soldiers in the Union army and 9,000 in the Confederate army.
