Could Celia E. and Louisa be the same person and perhaps misread on one of the
records?
Mrs. Ward's listing of this family includes a son named S. Merrimon Featherston,
who was given as a son of "Sebren" on his death certificate in Buncombe Co.. NC
under date of Dec. 30. 1930 [Bk 18/001]. Census records do not show Seaborn T.
to have had a child named S. Merrimon. Perhaps an error was made by the
informant following S. Merrimon's death. Census records show that Seaborn"s
brother, William, did have a son named Merriman. I believe this man was the same
as S. Merriman or S.M. as shown in NC records. Does anyone have a comment
regarding this
matter?)
2.5. Mariah Catherine Featherston - b. ca. 1815 Henderson Co., NC (dau of
Merrimon Featherstone and Amelia Mills), d. Nov 1870 Henderson Co., NC (JFH:
another source lists her date of death as 1 Jun 1875 in Oconee Co., SO. Mariah
had an illegitimate daughter, Harriet C.T. Featherstone in 1842 in SC. with talk
in the family about Mariah's connnection with a Georgia slave trader. She
returned to Henderson County and lived at home with her mother and brother
Ambrose Featherstone where eventually her brothers quit-claimed parts of their
property to her for land of her own for her support, which land became known as
the Mariah Alexander lands.
About 1851 in Pickens Co., SC she married Fountain Alexander - b. 12 Jun
1801 NC (son of Elijah Alexander and Sarah Grogan), d. Oct 1856. Mariah was his
second wife, and became stepmother to his three sons, David A., Terrel M.,
Henson and daughter Elizabeth. She and Fountain had two daughters in 1852/3 and
1855 respectively.
Fountain owned 350 acres of land on both sides of Crow Creek which he willed to
his sons under date of 6 Oct 1856 "by a deed of gift - sum of $5.00 paid by my
loving sons for 350 acres on both sides of Crow Creek adjoining Holdens land,
Lemuel Thomas' land, first granted to Barney Glenn and Robert Craven. Signed F.
Alexander, [seal]." Recorded June 1857. [Estate Papers, Pack 86, Clerk of
Court's office, Pickens Co., SC - Recorded 8 June 1857].
Also: "Fountain Alexander to Henson Alexander, deed of gift dated 6 Oct 1857,
$5.00 paid - all that tract of land I now live on adjoining Watson Stewart,
Robert Steward, Wm Newton, Robert Morgan". Signed F. Alexander [seal]. Recorded
8 June 1857. cont.
Following his death after October 6, 1856, Mariah returned to live on her
property in Henderson County, NC. She wrote her own will in June 1870, and died
later that same year in November. There is no indication of where she was
buried. She appointed Joseph Byers of Henderson County. Mariah Alexander left
the Henderson Co. property to her granddaughter, Mary Harriet C. Clyde, with a
life lease to Mary's mother Harriet. Susan and Aurora were minors at the time of
the writing of Mariah's will in June 1870 and at Mariah's death in November,
1870 and Joseph R. Byers was appointed their guardian. (Joseph R. Byers was son
of Francis and Julia (Jones) Byers.)
"...Merriman's daughter. Mariah...I got in touch with a lady descended from her.
As I remember the story, she was on a stage coach trip to visit some relatives.
The stage stopped to spend the night at an inn in South Carolina run by a
widower who had some children. The widower and Mariah visited, the widower asked

WALKER TURNER FEATHERSTON
(Farmer, Post-office, Middle Grove).
Mr. Featherston is a native of Kentucky, born in Fayette county, July 26, 1825.
His mother's maiden name was Sarah Wymore; his father came originally from
Virginia, but she was a native Kentuckian. She died when Walker T. was eight
years of age and had been the mother of 11 children. The father afterwards
married Rebecca Corman, who has borne him six children. In 1841,

when Walker T. was a youth some 16 years of age, the family removed to Missouri
and settled in Randolph county, two and a half miles from Middle Grove, in
Monroe county. Walker T. grew to manhood in Randolph county, and obtained a
good. general, common English education. He subsequently taught school more or
less regularly for about 20 years, up to 1868. He married Miss Amanda M.F.
Stephens, a daughter of William R. and Agnes (Nelson)) Stephens. of that county,
her father formerly of Fauquier county, Va., but her mother of Kentucky. Mr. and
Mrs. Featherston have seven children: Mary S., the wife of John M. Doyle, of
Monroe county; Minerva F., the wife of William J. Llewellyn, of Audrain county;
Walter A.. who married Laura D. Settle, a daughter of Martin E. Settle, and
resides in Monroe county; William S., who married Cora Llewellyn, the daughter
of John T. Llewellyn, of Audrain county; Thomas S.. who married Sarah R. Settle,
daughter of Martin E. Settle, of Monroe county; Oscar M.. still at home. and
Fannie A. who is still at home. Four of their children are deceased. Charles A.,
John E., Otho L. and James E. Mr. and Mrs. F. are members of the Christian
Church, and he is a deacon in the church - a man remarked among his co-members
and by all who know him for his earnest, exemplary Christian piety. He was
constable of Union township, Monroe county, Mo., and is now a successful farmer.
He has a neat farm in a good state of improvement and an excellent measure of
coal on his place. He is a prominent member of the A.F. and A.M., and has been a
delegate to the Grand Worthy Serene Convocation of that order several times at
St. Louis.
