Vol 161 Registry of Cuthbert Tunstall Bishop of Durham 1530-59 and James Pilkington Bish. of Durham 1561-76

item 337: ordination 5 Mar 1558 Auckland. Orders conferred by the Bishop of Durham: Acolytes, sub deacons, etc....

Deacon Antony Duglas and Wm Lowder of Carlisle dioc.. by the reason of letters dimissory titles of 5 and 6 pounds from the land of John Allenby, gent, Thomas Dent, gent; Frances Japar of Chester dioc by reason of letters of dimissory on a letter given by Francis Tunstall, esq; Christopher Faraly, George FH, etc.....

Volume 163: Estate Accounts of the Earl of Northumberland 1562-1637

1611: The accountant of Robert Delevale, esq, particular Receiver of the Rt. Hon. Henry Earl of NU in the County of NU from Michaelmas in the 8th year if the reign if King James 1 to Michaelmas in the 9th year of same.

A long detailed list of items follows, including wages, mill rents, etc.(..must have had good accountants in those days) and lastly at the end there is a subheading entitled Lawsuits: "paid to the Sheriff of NU for breaking open 4 writs against Albany Featherston, Ed Charlton and others, to the Sheriff's clerk for writs 1. 1s.

Account of Antony Felton 1591, accountant to Henry, Earl of NU
Foreign Receipts, Alexander Featherston, Late Sheriff, for creation money = 20 pounds.

Then starting in 1592 there is an entry as follows: Account owed charged to Alexander FH, late Sheriff for creation money 20 pounds

In 1592 and 1594 the accountant was Roger Thorpe, same same entry.

1595 and 1596 Accountant was Thomas Power, same entry

1598 was the same entry, except the Accountant was Antony Felton

1605 the accountant was Thomas Percy and the king was James I and there was the same entry which indicated that his 20 pounds was stilled owed, due in the 33rd year of Elizabeth's reign.

1606 and 1607: Accountant was Wm Wickcliffe and Robert Delavale and same Earl.

1608 was missing but then in 1609 there was no mention of Alexander owing money.

I found these accounts quite fascinating and am quite surprised that debts were carried over from one ruler to the next. They were all quite detailed and made for interesting reading. The word dimissory means (according to the Oxford Dictionary) " ordering or permitting to depart,or granting permission for a candidate to be ordained outside the bishop's own see"

Looking up an alternative meaning for creation, I found that it can also mean the act of investing with title or rank.

Volume 176 Ancient Petitions relating to Northumberland (PRO has originals?)

Section 11 p. 14: Emergency Administration

"....Also spec. interest is the request of Thomas de FH in completing the Staward Pele (no 21) as it refers to indentures made between King and himself to erect a 'pele' for 100 pounds, a bargain apparently of which Thomas repented as timber, stone and essentials were hard to carry to the site since the term of hi commission was running out. The dating of this petition is rendered diff., because although the Close Fine Rolls show that Thomas had custody of Staward in 1327, at which period he was also keeper for Edward III of N. Tynsdale, a memo date 1316 of captains indentured to garrum northern castle notes that Antony de Lucy 'ad eurpris de troves en sin Pele de Staworth', xi hommes darnier et .xl. hobe lous et serve entendeant au dit garden (CFR IV, pp 16, 63, 64; E 101/68/2/39)
