This is the last will and testament of me Craven John Featherstone of the City of Ripon Esquire a Captain in the Royal Navy made this twenty sixth day of September in the year of Our Lord One thousand eight hundred and sixty eight I appoint my cousin The Reverend John Browne and my friend Samuel Wise of the said City of Ripon Gentlemen Executors and Trustees of this my will And I give and devise unto them and their heirs All estates vested in me upon any trust or by way of mortgage subject to the equities affecting the same respectively I direct all my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses to be paid by my executors out of my personal estate I give and bequeath the several following pecuniary legacies or sums of money which I direct my executors to pay out of my personal estate free of legacy duty within six calendar months after my decease that is to say Two hundred pounds to my said cousin and executor the Reverend John Browne Two hundred pounds to my cousin John Browne of the City of Bath Two hundred pounds to my cousin Ann Robertson Two hundred pounds to my cousin Ann Eliza Fearon Two hundred pounds to my cousin Captain Richard Browne Royal Navy One hundred pounds to my cousin Tomyns Browne One hundred pounds to my cousin Susannah Patterson One hundred pounds to my cousin Mary Ann Cox [late Plunkett] One hundred pounds to John William Patterson Ten guineas to each of the daughters who shall be living at my decease of my late cousins Tomyns Scott Dickens, Eliza Barr and Mrs Fairbrass and of my said cousins Ann Eliza Fearon nineteen Guineas to my God daughter Mrs Lucy Davis Nineteen Guineas to my old friend and neighbour Miss Frances Benson Ten Guineas to my namesake George Craven Vincent Ten Guineas to Thomas Colling Esquire Ten Guineas to each of the Children of the said Samuel Wise living at my decease and Five Guineas to each of the children who shall be living at my death of the late Vice Admiral Moorsom and of the Reverend Canon Worsley Ten pounds to each of the following societies or institutions namely The Ripon Dispensary The Ripon Cathedral National Schools The Ripon Holy Trinity Church National Schools The Church Missionary Society The Propagation of the Gospel Society The Church Pastoral Aid Society The Additional Curates Aid Society The British and Foreign Bible Society The Royal Navy Female School The Royal Naval School [Newcross] The Royal Navy Benevolent Society and The Ripon Diocesan Church Building Society  I also give ten pounds to be equally divided amongst the inmates of the “Maison Dieu” in Saint Agnesgate Ripon and ten pounds amongst the inmates of” Saint Magdalens” and ten pounds amongst the inmates of “Saint Johns” in Ripon I give to my old and faithful friend and housekeeper Mrs Mary Gregory a legacy of one hundred pounds and to be paid to her as soon as conveniently may be after my decease free of legacy duty to enable her therewith to purchase furniture and other necessary things and I also direct my executors to raise out of my personal estate such a sum of money as will purchase a clear yearly government or other safe annuity of forty pounds for the said Mary Gregory during her life and which annuity I give to her accordingly in order that she may be comfortably provided for during the remainder of her life which it is my desire she should be  and I direct that all legacy duty and expenses which may be incurred or attendant upon the purchase of the said annuity shall be raised and paid by my executors out of my personal estate and that the said annuity or yearly sum of forty pounds shall be purchased by my said executors for the said Mary Gregory as soon after my decease as convenient and I should wish the same to be payable quarterly or half yearly commencing from the day of my decease I give to each of my executors the said Reverend John Browne and Samuel Wise a legacy of fifty pounds and I direct the same to be paid within six months after my decease free of legacy duty as an acknowledgment for their trouble I give and devise unto my cousin Jane Mary Browne All that my dwellinghouse wherein I now reside situate in Agnesgate in the City of Ripon aforesaid with the outbuildings yard gardens and appurtenances thereunto belonging and also my paddock or garth across the river opposite to my garden and also all my household goods and furniture plate linen china pictures prints and books and all my wine and other consumable stores To hold the same to her the said Jane Mary Browne her heirs and assigns for ever I give and devise unto my cousin Susannah Patterson during her natural life and at her decease I give the same dwellinghouse and premises to her husband John William Patterson during his life and after the death of the survivor of them I give and devise the said last mentioned dwellinghouse garden and premises to my said cousin and executor the Reverend John Browne his heirs and assigns for ever I wish and direct in case my cousin Mrs Ann Robertson shall survive me that the silver plate which I purchased of her shall be returned and given to her but if she dies in my lifetime than I direct my executors to sell the same plate and divide the proceeds equally amongst her daughters who may be living at my decease and as to all the residue and remainder of my monies estate property and effects whatsoever and wheresoever after payment and discharge of my debts and funeral and testamentary expenses and the several pecuniary legacies and sums of money hereinbefore bequeathed and directed to be raised and paid and the legacy duties payable in respect thereof I give and bequeath the same unto and equally between the said Jane Mary Browne and Susannah Patterson as tenants in common I declare and direct that my said executors shall not be responsible the one for the other of them but each of them only for his own acts receipts and defaults nor shall they be answerable for any involuntary loss which may happen to the trust property and I wish and direct that the said Samuel Wise shall be paid all usual professional costs and charges which shall be incurred in the execution of the trusts of this my will or anywise in relation thereto I revoke all former wills and codicils by me made In witness whereof I have signed my name at the foot or end of this my will the day and year first within written CJ Featherstone This is a codicil to the last will and testament of me Craven John Featherstone of the City of Ripon Esquire a Captain in the Royal Navy which will bears date the twenty sixth day of September in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty eight Whereas I have in and by my said will given and bequeathed to my faithful housekeeper Mrs Mary Gregory a pecuniary legacy of one hundred pounds and an annuity of forty pounds during her life free of legacy duty and I am now desirous to give her an additional legacy of fifty pounds and to increase her annuity from forty pounds to fifty pounds Now therefore I hereby give to the said Mary Gregory a further legacy of fifty ponds free of legacy duty and to be paid to her within six months after my decease and I also hereby direct the executors of my will to purchase for the said Mary Gregory out of my personal estate an annuity or yearly sum of fifty pounds during her life in lieu and instead of the annuity of forty pounds named in and given to her by my said will and I give the said annuity of fifty pounds free of legacy duty and payable in the same manner as is mentioned in my said will with regard to the original annuity thereby given and whereas I have also by my said will given a legacy of ten guineas to each of the daughters who shall be living at my decease of my late cousins Tomyns Scott Dickens , Eliza Barr and Mrs Fairbrass and of my cousins Ann Robertson , Richard Browne, Tomyns Browne, Mrs Mary Ann Cox and Mrs Ann Eliza Fearon and I am now anxious to make a like bequest to their sons Now therefore I give and bequeath a legacy of ten guineas to each of the sons who shall be living at my decease of all my said several cousins hereinbefore named in the same manner and payable at the same time as is mentioned in my said will as regards the legacies thereby given to the daughters of my said cousins I confirm my said will in all other respects In witness whereof I have at the foot or end of this codicil subscribed my hand this thirtieth day of October one thousand eight hundred and sixty eight CJ Featherstone Signed and acknowledged by the said testator Craven John Featherstone as and for a codicil to his will in the presence of us who at his request in his presence and in the presence of each other all being present at the same time have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses Thos Liley Thos Packer Clerk to Messrs S Wise & Son

Proved at Wakefield with a Codicil the 5th day of March 1870 by the oaths of the Reverend John Browne Clerk and Samuel Wise the executors named in the will to whom administration was granted
